Choosing the Right Format

This is your overlooked chance to stand out. Stay quirky.

There is so much more to podcasts than an interview. Yet so often, that is the default setting for new show ideas.

In this episode you’re going to find out about the different formats available to you, their pros and cons, and hopefully come away with an idea of which one might be best for you and your organisation.

But beyond this, there lies a unique opportunity. One that I think is missed by a lot of shows.

Your format is a chance to make your show into a genre of it’s own. A purple cow. Something remarkable.

We see this more commonly in TV. Take Taskmaster for example. What a piece of art. The beauty of that show lies in it’s format. And now, 17 seasons later, the show is a genre all by itself.

In a medium that is crowded, opportunities to stand out should be considered carefully.

Most podcasts try to be unique through their guest choice, production value or how controversial they’re willing to be. All of those are sticky games to play.

The main takeaway here is not to overlook this choice and just settle for whichever format you first thought of when you conceived of your podcast idea. Have fun, experiment, make tweaks along the way.

Go back to last weeks episode and we talk about experimenting, learning and adapting through lean production methods. This is exactly what we’re talking about here.

And the real beauty is that a new show is easily forgiven for not being super polished. Mistakes are more like quirks and often those quirks are exactly what make it cool to early adopters. Lean into those quirks and idiosyncrasies.

Stay creative.
